Is schooling = learning?
Is schooling a way to acquire knowledge or just another stage of life for students? If schooling is a procedure to gain knowledge, then is our teaching pedagogy accommodating the learning styles of the students to help them gain knowledge? If schooling provides students the opportunity to learn, then the pedagogy should empower learners to acquire knowledge. The current school system determines learners' ability and knowledge based on predetermined evaluation criteria. Students who are nurtured differently under various environments may perform differently academically. Despite that, children from diverse backgrounds are all evaluated under the same set of assessment tools.
Every learner’s results of learning have been discriminated unfairly against under the same system. Students' learning behaviour may also be impacted based on the results they get in the one-size-fits-all kind of evaluation system. In other words, students' learning journey is predetermined by the framework of the education system. Students with different gifted areas may not fit in well with the existing education evaluation system. Students with exceptional talent may fall out of the education ecosystem and may feel helpless in their abilities. Due to the failure of discovering and nurturing the gifted area, these children may fall into the cracks of society. Hence, school is a place for learning, but not the only place for learning.
Everybody is a genius. If you judge a fish based on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.
