Learning Methods

What is the Orton-Gillingham Approach? The Orton-Gillingham approach, also known as the OG approach, is guided by 6 underlying principles.

Diagnostic & Prescriptive

There is no single dyslexic alike in their learning styles. The OG Approach promotes personalized learning by recognizing individual learners' challenges and learning styles. Teachers can recognize students' learning needs through placement tests or past reports.

Structured, Sequential & Cumulative

The OG Approach promotes learning the English language through a structured, sequential, and cumulative manner. In this structure and cumulative process, learners are learning the components, the rules, and generalizations sequentially. The accumulation of this information gives learners the foundation to master the English language.

Simultaneously & Multi-sensory

According to Edgar Dale (1946), the cone of learning, learners can remember...

10% of what they read,

20% of what they hear,

30% of what they see,

50% of what they hear and see,

70% of what they say and write,

and 90% of what they do.

It is believed that experience shapes the way learners perceive information. The OG Approach stresses the importance of recognizing the letterform and the sounds through speech organs and tactile sensory. The letter perception will further strengthen through hands-on practice. The engagement in a combination of sensory information can create new neural pathways to help mainstream and special needs learners process information. The multisensory learning method helps diverse learners to create a stronger neurological connection to the information and sustain the memory.

Language-based

The OG principle also highlights the importance of learning the English language by comprehending, processing, and using the language effectively. During these processes, learners can recognize the connection between the print representation and the sound structures.

Emotionally sound

Theory of mind has highlighted the importance of ensuring a learning experience for learners to encourage an active learning mindset. The materials have adopted a multi-sensory learning approach to motivate learners.

Cognitive

Understanding the components of languages gives 85% of prediction when learners can recognize rules and generalizations in the English Language. Learners can process the language components instead of relying on guesswork.

The OG Approach is an internationally recognized learning method to support both special needs and mainstream children.
